Welcome

The Student's folk dance ensemble Zornitsa is formed in 1981. The repertoire of the ensemble presents the best and the most typical art specimens from each ethnographic region of Bulgaria: the playfulness of Misia, the swift as the wind rhythms of Shopluka (Sofia district), the passionate warm-heartedness of sunny Thrace the ritual homage paying to the fruit-bearing earth of the Rhodopes and the romanticrebel spirit of Macedonia in the area of the Pirin Mountains. Many dance forms are included in the concert program of the ensemble - subject and thematic forms suites.

Balkan Festival of Academic Youth

June 15th, 2007

ВарнаThe city of Varna was the kind host of the First Balkan Folk Student Festival from June 8th – 10th 2007.

The idea for the festival was born last year when the Students’ Councils of five universities from Varna decided to organize a local folk competition. This idea developed into creating a bigger festival which would give groups from all over the Balkans the chance to participate. The criteria was the wish of the local groups to participate and the only condition was that all those taking part were students of the universities their groups were going to represent.

And thus the First Balkan Folk Student Festival became a place where young people from all over the Balkans could meet each other and share their experiences… A place that gave the opportunity for these young people to meet and understand different cultural practices, to break the prejudices and to overcome the stereotypes…

ВарнаThe idea of the students received support from the Municipality of Varna (represented by its mayor Kiril Yordanov and The Youth Activities and Sport Unit) and a lot of sponsors. And everyone was waiting for July 8th when the raising of the 3 flags (that of Bulgaria, that of the European Union and that of the festival) was the official symbol of the beginning of the festival.

The participants in the festival were the following: KUD “Slavia” – Saraevo, Bosnia and Herzegovina; Center for Intercultural Dialogue – Kumanovo, Macedonia; Kultural Association “Stefanos Kariatidis”, Neavisa, Greece. The Bulgarian participants were representing the Technical University – Sofia; Technical University – Varna; Varna Free University “Chernorizets Hrabar”; University of Economics – Varna; Medical University – Varna.

Also participating were dancers from Zornitsa students’ ensemble, Sofia. The twenty five performers presented to the audience in Varna “Mixed Dance from Thrace”, “Shoppian Suite”, “Women’s Shoppian dance”, “Men’s Dance from Thrace”. The last evening the festival closed with “Zevzetsi”, presented by Zornitsa as well.

ВарнаVarna received the guests and the participants in the festival with it’s cloudless sky, shining sun and warm sea breeze. The rich colours in the costumes, fast rhythms, nice compositions and charming smiles of the participants added additional fascination to this city during the three days of the festival.

Folk dance ensemble “Zornitsa” won The Golden Carnation!

On 07.07.2007, while in Bulgaria hundreds of couples were saying “I do” in front of the alter, hoping that the number 7 will bring them happiness in their marriage, under the bright sky of Yalova, Turkey, the dancers from ensemble “Zornitsa” were receiving loud applause from the audience gathered to watch the final competition of the 21 st International Folklore Festival “The Golden Carnation”.

During the competition concert dancers from South Korea, Mexico, Columbia, Jordania, Sweden, Slovakia, Bosnia and Herzegovina , Romania and Bulgaria performed their best dances and were being judged by competent jury from elected members from the dancers of each group. After the end of our “Shopska suite”, and as well as during the whole stay of the group, everybody said with absolute certainty – ensemble “Zornitsa” are number 1 in the classification and the Bulgarian dancers are the best.

The victory was well deserved, in spite of the severe competition and good performances of the groups from Mexico and Columbia, which in the end were classified on second and third place respectively, but still applauded when ensemble “Zornitsa” was pronounced winner of The Golden Carnation. The cup was handed by the vice mayor of Yalova Mr Ibrahim Akai. After all the happy emotions that the group experienced during their seven-day stay in Turkey, the date 07.07.07 will undoubtedly remain unforgettable in the 25 year-old history of “Zornitsa”.
